Timothy Schofield Convicted of Sexually Abusing Minor Boy

Date:

Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that Timothy Schofield, the brother of television presenter Phillip Schofield, has been found guilty of 11 sexual offences involving a child. The 54-year-old from Bath had denied the charges, which took place between October 2016 and October 2019, but was convicted by a jury at Exeter Crown Court with a majority of 10-2 after more than five-and-a-half hours’ deliberating.

Phillip Schofield released a statement after the verdict, saying: “As far as I am concerned, I no longer have a brother.” He also expressed his concern for the victim and their family, and asked for their privacy to be respected. It was revealed during the trial that Timothy Schofield had confessed to his brother about watching pornography with the teenager on one occasion, claiming it had happened after the boy was 16.

The jury heard how Timothy Schofield had performed sexual acts on the boy and also admitted to watching pornography with him and masturbating while sitting apart. The victim said he felt “emotionally blackmailed” and “forced” to participate in sexual activity. An NSPCC spokesperson said Schofield’s actions were “deeply harmful” and that the young man he targeted should be receiving all the support he needs to move forward with his life.

Avon and Somerset Police have now started misconduct proceedings against Timothy Schofield, who was a civilian worker for them at the time of the offences. He has been suspended from duty since December 2021 when the criminal proceedings began. Senior Investigating Officer Det Insp Keith Smith said: “[Schofield] has exploited and abused the victim by carrying out a sickening series of offences over a significant period of time.” He added that although the offences were not linked to his employment, they understand the fact he works for the police is a matter of public concern.

Timothy Schofield has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on 19 May. The police have asked for the victim’s privacy to be respected, and for anyone affected by this case to contact them for support.
