Tech exec charged in Cash App founder’s murder

Date:

On Thursday, San Francisco police arrested Nima Momeni, a 38-year-old tech executive and founder of software company Expand IT, on suspicion of murdering Cash App founder Bob Lee. Lee was fatally stabbed in downtown San Francisco last week, and his death sent shockwaves through the tech community.

While Momeni was known to Lee, the police have declined to discuss a possible motive or why the two men were together on the night in question. San Francisco Police Chief William Scott confirmed that Momeni was arrested in connection with the murder but did not provide further details.

Lee’s death has sparked renewed debate about public safety in San Francisco, with Tesla founder Elon Musk criticizing the city’s violent crime situation as “horrific.” However, San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins hit back at Musk, accusing him of making reckless statements that could mislead people about the circumstances surrounding Lee’s death.

Lee was a well-known figure in California’s tech scene, having helped develop Google’s Android platform while working for the search engine giant. He later co-founded Cash App, an alternative to traditional banking, while serving as the chief technology officer for Square (now known as Block). In 2021, Lee joined MobileCoin as Chief Product Officer.

Momeni is expected to appear in court on Friday. His LinkedIn profile describes him as an IT consultant and entrepreneur, while California business filings list him as the CEO, secretary, and CFO of Expand IT.
