Tech CEOs warn of AI’s ‘extinction risk’

Date:

A group of leading computer scientists and technologists have issued a warning about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI), claiming that it poses a “risk of extinction” that requires global action. The group, which includes figures such as Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “godfather of AI”, and Audrey Tang, Taiwan’s digital minister, has called for mitigating the risk of extinction from AI to be a global priority, alongside other societal scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war. The warning follows an open letter signed by Elon Musk and other high-profile figures earlier this year that called for a six-month pause on AI development.
