RIYADH: Reflecting the strengthening of economic and investment ties between Riyadh and Muscat, Omani companies signed multiple contracts and memoranda of understanding at the Saudi Food Show held last week.   Oman, represented by the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates, or Madayn, had fruitful bilateral discussions with key company executives, investors, commercial agents and suppliers from Saudi Arabia at the event held in Riyadh.

Egypt’s Central Bank Maintains Stable Interest Rates

CAIRO: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) kept its key overnight interest rates unchanged on Thursday, saying commodity prices appear to be falling and economic growth is likely to recover in the fiscal year that begins next week. As expected, the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) left the lending rate steady at 19.25 percent and the deposit rate at 18.25 percent. Not one of 17 analysts polled by Reuters on Monday had forecast a change.

“April imports to Saudi Arabia decrease by 16.1% to $15.4bn”

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s merchandise imports decreased 16.1 percent to SR57.9 billion ($15.4 billion) in April 2023 compared to SR69 billion in March 2023, according to the latest data released by the General Authority for Statistics.  However, the Kingdom’s merchandise imports increased by 1 percent in April 2023 compared to SR57.3 million in April 2022. According to the report, overall merchandise exports decreased 25.2 percent to SR103 billion in April 2023 compared to SR137.7 billion in the same month last year.

“Ukrainian Kickboxing Champ Maksym Bordus Dies in War”

KYIV: Ukrainian kickboxing champion Maksym Bordus has been killed fighting Russian forces, a website that lists athletes killed in the war said on Tuesday. Bordus was killed on June 11 in “fierce fighting against Russian invaders,” according to “Sport Angels,” a Ukrainian website set up with the assistance of the Sports Committee that brings together NGOs and federations from non-Olympic sports. “Every day he brought Ukraine’s victory closer with a weapon in his hands, but he himself will not see it,” it wrote under a photograph of Bordus posing with several medals.

PIF’s Jada to Boost Saudi Arabia’s Startup Scene

CAIRO: Saudi Arabia’s startup landscape has received a significant push after a subsidiary of the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund committed to investing in several venture capital vehicles. PIF’s Jada Fund of Funds Co. plans to invest an undisclosed amount in Bahrain-based Investcorp’s $500 million Saudi pre-initial public offering growth fund. The investment vehicle is exclusively focused on supporting a diverse range of companies based in Saudi Arabia during their pre-IPO stage.

“China’s May Industrial Output Up by 3.5%”

BEIJING: China’s economy stumbled in May with industrial output and retail sales growth missing forecasts, adding to expectations that Beijing will need to do more to shore up a shaky post-pandemic recovery. The economic rebound seen earlier this year has lost momentum in the second quarter, prompting China’s central bank to cut some key interest rates this week for the first time in nearly a year, with expectations of more to come.
