At minimum 40 people today died and much more than 200 had been injured in a stampede at a funeral procession for Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, as Iranian authorities struggled to regulate the massive crowds rallying towards the U.S.’s focused killing of the potent navy chief.
The stampede was induced by overcrowding as mourners collected to spend their respects to Gen. Soleimani in the city of Kerman, Pirhossein Koulivand, the head of Iran’s unexpected emergency health care services, explained to state television.
