A Russian cruise missile fragment fell just meters away from Lyudmila Lopashchenko near a book market in northern Kyiv. The missile belonged to an Iskander, one of the 11 hypersonic ballistic missiles Moscow launched on the Ukrainian capital on Monday morning, in a rare daytime attack. Despite the ongoing barrage of attacks, many Kyivans have become accustomed to the violence and continue with their daily lives. However, the attacks have resulted in casualties and damage to buildings. The Ukrainian air defense system uses advanced United States-made surface-to-air Patriot missile systems, which have proven successful in shooting down Russian missiles. The late-night bangs of Patriots symbolize the imminent victory over Moscow for many Ukrainians. Tuesday brought news about Ukraine’s possible response to the attacks, with at least eight attack drones striking residential areas in Moscow, damaging buildings along the central Leninsky Avenue. The Kremlin downplayed the incident, but the founder and owner of the Wagner Group private military force called it catastrophic. Ukrainian officials denied their role in the attacks and trolled the Kremlin.
