Pakistani-born, Saima Mohsin, has been appointed as the United States’ first Muslim attorney by the administration of President Joe Biden.

Earlier she had been serving as the First Assistant United States Attorney since March 2018. According to the reports, Mohsin is the first Muslim woman immigrant to serve as the United States Attorney in the history of America.

She will assume the charge following the resignation of the current attorney Matthew Schneider. The US Justice Department said Mohsin will “immediately assume office as Acting United States Attorney” as per the Vacancies Reform Act.

“She is a career prosecutor, having served in the US Attorney’s Office since 2002, and before that as a Deputy New Jersey Attorney General and an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan,” wrote the US Justice Department.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the presence of a Muslim attorney in Biden’s administration would reflect the diversity of the American population.

The US-based media outlet has reported that Mohsin is a graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey. She completed her bachelor’s and a law degree from the institute.

The outgoing attorney Schneider is all praise for Mohsin. He said he is “pleased” to leave US Attorney’s Office for Eastern District Michigan for Mohsin. He is confident she will serve the office well. He called her “one of the finest federal prosecutors” he’s ever known.

“Saima is a dynamic trial lawyer and a talented manager. And, as the first woman, immigrant, Muslim United States Attorney in American history, her service is truly historic,” said Schneider. Schneider believes Mohsin will be an outstanding lawyer who will rightly defend the community.

But the position of the acting US attorney is a temporary post. US laws allow judges to appoint an interim US attorney. Also, President Joe Biden can select someone to fill the position that could be confirmed by US Senate.
