US Arms Control Official to Visit Israel and Turkey Next Week for Security Discussions

LONDON: A senior US official is set to travel to Israel and Turkiye next week to discuss security issues and weapons control, the State Department said on Thursday. “Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, Mallory Stewart, will travel to Jerusalem and Ankara during the week of Sept. 4-9,” the State Department said in a statement.

“Fatal Bus Accident in Central Turkey Claims 12 Lives”

ANKARA: A passenger bus veered off the road and crashed into a roadside ditch in central Turkiye on Monday, killing 12 people and injuring 19 others, officials said. The driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle, which crossed into the oncoming lane and then plunged into the ditch near the central Turkish city of Yozgat, Gov. Mehmet Ali Ozkan said. The bus was traveling from Sivas — some 240 kilometers (150 miles) east of Yozgat — to Istanbul. Ozkan said 11 of the passengers died at the scene of the crash while one died later in the hospital.

German MP detained in Turkey for social media posts

BERLIN: A German lawmaker said on Sunday she was detained for several hours when entering Turkiye earlier this month based on social media posts she made in 2019, adding that she would still travel to Turkiye and speak her mind about its government. Goekay Akbulut, a Bundestag member for far-left Die Linke party, was detained in Antalya airport on Aug. 3 after an arrest warrant was issued by the Turkish public prosecutor for alleged “terror propaganda,” she said.

Turkey withdraws from hosting crucial UN nature talks

PARIS: Turkiye has said it cannot host a major UN biodiversity meeting in 2024 as it reels from a series of devastating earthquakes this year, according to the UN body that oversees the talks. The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity said the Turkish government had decided to withdraw from presiding over the COP16 meeting “due to a force majeure situation created by the three destructive earthquakes that occurred in February 2023.”
