Authorities in Nova Scotia, Canada have requested outside assistance as firefighters battle wildfires that have forced over 16,000 people to evacuate their homes. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston has reached out to officials in the northeastern United States to seek additional resources, and other provinces have already provided assistance, including several water bombers. Dozens of firefighters are working to contain two large out-of-control blazes near the provincial capital of Halifax, with 14 fires burning across the province. The fires have destroyed or damaged over 200 structures, mostly homes, and caused hazy skies and anxiety among residents. The Tantallon Fire, which is about 30km west of Halifax, has grown to about 837 hectares, while two others in the Barrington Lake and Pubnico areas are also considered out of control. No injuries have been reported. Halifax Mayor Mike Savage said that people are understandably tired, frustrated and frightened. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pledged federal support, and experts have pointed to climate change as a factor that has worsened extreme weather such as wildfires, heatwaves and tropical storms around the world.
