Syrian refugees at Zaatari camp in Jordan are working with experts from the College of Sheffield and the UN Refugee Agency to develop a way to increase balanced, clean foods with almost nothing but water and outdated mattress foam.
These ‘recycled gardens’ use the mattresses in area of the soil, which solves two complications in one particular: It reuses the mountain of plastic mattresses that have piled up in the camp and it enables absolutely everyone to grow fresh new meals in a crowded, desert atmosphere.
Victoria Gill has been to the camp in Jordan to see how it can be performing.
