Kabuga, Rwandan Genocide Suspect, Declared Unfit for Trial

Date:

Felicien Kabuga, a 90-year-old Rwandan genocide suspect, has been ruled unfit to stand trial by judges at a United Nations war crimes court in The Hague. Kabuga was arrested in May 2020 after evading capture for decades and is accused of financing Hutu militias and encouraging hate speech through his radio station during the 1994 genocide. The court put his trial on hold in March due to health concerns and has now decided to pursue an “alternative finding procedure” that resembles a trial but without the possibility of conviction. Kabuga has denied the charges against him.
