At least 288 people were killed and over 800 injured in a train derailment in eastern India on Friday. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has told the ANI news agency that the accident was caused by an error in the electronic signalling system that sent the trains on the wrong tracks. The minister stated that the cause of the accident and the people responsible for it have been identified. However, he added that it was not appropriate to give details before a final inquiry report into the incident, which is India’s deadliest rail disaster in decades. The passenger trains were not overspeeding, and the root cause of the crash was related to an error in the electronic signalling system. A detailed investigation will reveal whether the error was human or technical. Despite government efforts to improve safety, hundreds of accidents occur every year on India’s railways, which is the fourth largest train network in the world.
