Gaza’s Resilient Students: Continuing Education Amidst Destruction and Hope for Rebuilding

Date:

In Gaza, where the echoes of conflict reverberate through the ruins of once-thriving educational institutions, the resilience of students and educators shines through the darkness. Despite the devastation wrought by ongoing violence, the spirit of learning persists, offering a glimmer of hope amid despair. The Islamic University of Gaza stands as a testament to this determination, where students have adapted to extreme conditions to continue their education.

Aseel, an English translation student, describes studying as “an escape” from the harsh realities surrounding her. For many students, education has become a sanctuary, a space where they can find motivation and a sense of achievement. The challenges are immense; power outages and internet disruptions have forced students to rely on solar energy to charge their devices and to engage with recorded lectures in improvised study groups. These makeshift solutions have allowed education to endure, but the need for substantial financial support to rebuild the educational infrastructure is urgent. The Islamic University has recently announced initial renovations, but the road to recovery is long and fraught with obstacles.

Samah, another student, reflects on the frustrations of online learning in a war-torn environment. “The internet was weak, and I’d lose time reconnecting,” she recalls. Yet, each exam passed felt like a victory, a testament to her resilience. The destruction of educational resources has been staggering; reports indicate that by early 2025, 95 percent of school buildings in Gaza had been damaged or destroyed. The Islamic University alone has suffered extensive losses, including the destruction of 16 buildings and over 240,000 books, valued at approximately $141.9 million.

The impact of this destruction extends beyond physical resources. The university waived tuition fees during the first year of the genocide, a necessary measure to support students but one that further strained its already limited finances. Tragically, the human cost has been profound, with 56 academic and administrative staff members reported killed and around 17,000 students dropping out due to the ongoing violence.

The challenges faced by students are compounded by the psychological toll of living in a conflict zone. Hala, a student of Islamic law, laments the loss of the vibrant campus life that once characterized her education. “Online learning was just a way to get through the courses,” she states, emphasizing the importance of in-person interactions and the communal aspects of learning. The struggle to maintain focus amid chaos is a common theme among students, with many finding solace in their studies even as they grapple with the realities of their situation.

Sulaiman, a professor specializing in educational foundations, highlights the critical role education plays in fostering resilience. He notes that despite the challenges, educators have worked tirelessly to maintain connections with students and provide support. As Gaza begins to rebuild, there is hope for a gradual return to traditional classroom settings, with plans to prioritize the restoration of laboratories and smart classrooms.

The future of education in Gaza is inextricably linked to the broader reconstruction efforts in the region. As institutions like the Islamic University strive to rise from the ashes, there is a collective aspiration to evolve curricula that meet contemporary demands and equip students for the challenges ahead. The journey is daunting, but the commitment to education remains unwavering, embodying a form of defiance against the forces that seek to undermine it.

In this context, the resilience of Gaza’s students and educators serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit. Their stories reflect not only the struggles of a community under siege but also the profound importance of education as a beacon of hope and a foundation for rebuilding a future. As the world watches, the determination to learn and grow amidst adversity continues to inspire, offering a vision of what is possible even in the darkest of times.
