French Open allows Sabalenka to skip press conference on Ukraine war.

Date:

Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has been allowed to skip the traditional post-match press conference at the French Open and instead speak with a “pool” of selected journalists. Sabalenka, who reached the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kamilla Rakhimova, did not appear at a news conference on Friday after being asked about her stance on the war in Ukraine during previous conferences. Sabalenka said she “did not feel safe” at her news conference on Wednesday and wanted to protect her “mental health and well-being”. The tournament and the WTA supported her decision and she will not be fined. In 2021, Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open after being fined and threatened with disqualification for skipping news conferences.
