Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to repatriate one million Syrian refugees, but the ongoing conflict in Syria could make this difficult to achieve. Erdogan emphasised the issue during his recent election campaign, causing concern among the 3.4 million Syrians living in Turkey, who are increasingly resented by Turkish voters. Many of the refugees come from parts of Syria that remain under President Bashar Assad’s control and say they cannot return while he remains in power. Erdogan has said that with Qatari help, Turkey has been building new housing in rebel-held northwest Syria to accommodate returning refugees. However, many Syrians in Turkey are reluctant to return to their homeland while conditions remain unstable.
