Brazilian singer and songwriter Astrud Gilberto, known for her English-language cameo on the classic bossa nova song The Girl from Ipanema, has passed away at the age of 83. Gilberto became an overnight sensation in 1964 after being recruited by the makers of the album Getz/Gilberto, which featured her then-husband Joao Gilberto and saxophonist Stan Getz. The album, which sold over two million copies and won three Grammy Awards, helped popularize bossa nova beyond Brazil. Gilberto released eight albums over the next few years before retiring from the music industry in 2002 to focus on animal rights activism and visual arts. She received a Latin Grammy for lifetime achievement in 2008.
