Ocean Viking Rescues 46 Migrants Attempting to Reach Europe
The migrant rescue ship Ocean Viking, operated by the humanitarian NGO SOS Mediterranee, saved 46 people in distress off the coast of Libya on Friday. The migrants were attempting to reach Europe in a fiberglass boat when they encountered trouble. Among those rescued were four single women, a four-year-old girl traveling with her father, and around ten unaccompanied minors. The majority of the survivors are from Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
The central mediterranean route is known to be the most dangerous migration route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Since the beginning of 2023, the IOM has estimated that 1,728 migrants have disappeared in this region, surpassing the total number for the entire year of 2022, which was 1,417.
Frontex, the EU’s border patrol agency, has reported a significant increase in boat crossings across the central Mediterranean, particularly from North African countries such as Tunisia to EU nations including Italy and Malta. Between January and May of this year, these crossings have more than doubled compared to the same period in 2022.

In June, an overcrowded fishing trawler carrying hundreds of migrants sank off the coast of Greece, resulting in one of the deadliest migrant tragedies in recent years. While 104 people were rescued and 82 bodies were recovered, it is estimated that as many as 560 others on board may have perished.
